Identifying Threads

It is important to identify the Threads

Identifying threads can sometimes be the most difficult. However, without the right combination of threads, you may not provide a functional or safe connection.

The diameters, threads per inch (TPI) and thread pitch, etc. are necessary to completely identify a thread. Ring, Plug and GO/NOGO gauges are required to accurately gauge or identify threads. In the field, in the absence of these gauges, thread leaf gauges can be used to identify the "Threads Per Inch" (TPI) and the thread pitch. On threads you have determined to be straight threads, a caliper can be used to measure the "Outside Diameter of the Male" (ODM) or the "Inside Diameter of the Female" (IDF). A caliper can also be used to take measurements of tapered thread diameters. However, these are more difficult to define because of the taper. Fortunately, there are few tapered threads to deal with and these can usually be identified from the nominal ODM and the TPI.

However, identifying the thread may not fully identify what is needed in a mating fitting. The application is the primary limiting factor on the thread type used. Tech Tubes & Fittings offers products with a wide variety of threads used with hoses, pipes and hydraulics.

When attempting to choose a fitting, it is always advisable to first identify the thread to which it must connect. This may entail checking with a fitting or equipment manufacturer.

The fire hose thread specifications for some local municipal fire equipment and hydrants may vary according to local specifications. These can generally be most easily identified by contacting the local fire department responsible for the hydrant. The most common thread used on fire equipment is National Standard Thread (NST), also known as National Hose thread (NH).

When it is not possible to identify the thread:

1. Determine the number of threads per inch by measuring the distance from peak of thread to peak of thread across the largest number of whole threads. Then divide the number of threads by the measurement. (This will provide the TIP.)

2. Check to see if the thread is straight or tapered.

  • Straight Threads - Measure the "Outside Diameter of the Male" (ODM) or the "Inside Diameter of the Female" (IDF), from peak of thread to peak of thread.

  • Tapered Threads - Measure the "Outside Diameter of the Male" (ODM) at the large end and the small end, or the "Inside Diameter of the Female" (IDF) at the large end and the small end, from peak of thread to peak of thread. Then measure the "Outside Diameter" (OD) of the unthreaded pipe.

How to Identify Size and Type of Tube Fittings ?

Many of our clients, especially Power Plants have a dilemma of choosing the right product. During installation of machinery and building the plant they appoint foreign companies for installation, erection purpose or buy the part or machinery directly. Over time these Plants need to change their Tube Fittings due to wear and tear. Unfortunately  many of them do not make the necessary replacement or order the surplus in time. Due to this, there is a temporary fear of stalling of processes and plant.

Considering this issue, we are trying to make it easy for our readers to identify the types of Tube Fittings.

TUBE FITTINGS : Tube Fittings are Fittings used to Connect Tube to Tube or Tube to Male Threads or Female Threads.

IDENTIFICATION : The photos in mentioned link http://techtubes.in/instrumentation-fittings ( clearly indicate the types of fittings (Union, Union Elbow, Union Tee, Union Cross, Male Connector, Female Connector, Connector Elbow, Run Tee, Branch Tee etc.,)

MEASUREMENT :

  1. With a vernier Measure the size of the OD (Outer Diameter) of the Tube

or the ID (Inner Diameter) of Nut to find the accurate dimensions of the Tube connection side.

2. Measure the diameter of the threads (do not measure the pitch diameter) for the End Connection side and refer the details below:

1/8” NPT or BSP : 9mm to 10mm Appx.

1/4” NPT or BSP : 12.5mm to 13.5mm Appx.

3/8” NPT or BSP : 16mm to 17mm Appx.

1/2” NPT or BSP : 20mm to 21mm Appx.

3/4” NPT or BSP : 25.5mm to 26.5mm Appx.

1” NPT or BSP : 32mm to 33mm Appx.

The above method is raw, yet effective. Considering the urgency or emergency it can be very helpful. Most of the techno commercial / User departments do not have easy access to the Purchase transaction history. They are helpless when it comes to easily identifying and checking the Size, Type, MOC of the material installed.

In case if the purchase history is available, you may identify the parts by their billed names , for instance :

SS 304L Union Tee,  SS 304L Union Elbow, SS 304L Connector, SS 304L Union, SS 304L Run Tee, SS 304L Male Tee, SS 304L Male Elbow, SS 304L Cross, SS 304L Nuts, SS 304L Ferrule, SS 304L Double Ferrule Tube Fittings, SS 316L Union Tee,  SS 316L Union Elbow, SS 316L Connector, SS 316L Union, SS 316L Run Tee, SS 316L Male Tee, SS 316L Male Elbow, SS 316L Cross, SS 316L Nuts, SS 316L Ferrule, SS 316L Double Ferrule Tube Fittings etc.,

The Sizes like 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 25mm, 1/4", 1/2", 3/8", 3/4",  1" etc., along with their connection size: 1/4"BSP/NPT, 1/8"BSP/NPT, 1/2"BSP/NPT, 3/4"BSP/NPT, 1"BSP/NPT  etc., are mentioned.

Functions and Uses of Needle Valves

Needle Valves plays an important role in regulating the amount of substance by flow, pressure
and direction. These valves have the ability to shut off the flow entirely. These valves resemble
globe valves, except they Needle Valves have a point rather than a disc at the end of the valve
stems.

Needle Valves are specially designed to control the flow of liquid or gas so that the flow can be
decreased gradually and ultimately  shut off completely. Needle valves have a smaller seating
surface hence are suitable for throttle control. Needle Valves are used to control flow into delicate
gauges, which might be damaged by sudden surges of fluid under pressure. Since the orifice is small
and the force advantage of the fine-threaded stem is high, needle valves are usually easy to shut
off completely with merely 'finger tight' pressure.

Tech Tubes & Fittings is a leading Needle Valve exporter to countries all around the globe.
We reputation is defined as a quality Needle Valve exporter.

Common Types of Needle Valves used in industries :

  • Stainless Steel 304 Needle Valves
  • Stainless Steel 304L Needle Valves
  • Stainless Steel 316 Needle Valves
  • Stainless Steel 316L Needle Valves
  • Brass Needle Valves
  • High Pressure Needle Valves
  • 10000 Psi High Pressure Needle Valves
  • 6000 Psi Needle Valves
  • 3000 Psi Needle Valves

Choosing the most appropriate type of Stainless Steel for Single Compression Tube Fittings and Double Compression Tube Fittings

Following are the most important factors you should consider while choosing the  right Stainless Steel for
your Single Ferrule Compression Tube Fittings and Double Compression Tube Fittings.

  • Corrosive Environment : Atmospheric, Water, Concentration of particular chemicals, chloride content, presence of acid.
  • Temperature of Operation : High temperatures usually accelerate corrosion rates and therefore indicate a higher grade. Low temperatures will require a tough austenitic steel.
  • Strength Required – Higher strength can be obtained from the Austenitic, Duplex, Martensitic and PH steels. Other processes such as welding and forming often influence which of these is most suitable. For example, high strength austenitic steels produced by work hardening would not be suitable where welding was necessary as the process would soften the steel.
  • Customer expectation regarding performance of material  – This is an important consideration often missed in the selection process. Particularly, what are the aesthetic requirements as compared to the structural requirements?
  • There may also be special requirements such as non-magnetic properties to take into account.
  • It must also be borne in mind that steel type alone is not the only factor in material selection. Surface finish is at least as important in many applications, particularly where there is a strong aesthetic component.
  • Availability: There may be a perfectly correct technical choice of material which cannot be implemented because it is not available in the time required.
  • Cost: Sometimes the correct technical option is not finally chosen on cost grounds alone. However, it is important to assess cost on the correct basis. Many stainless steel applications are shown to be advantageous on a life cycle cost basis rather than initial cost.
