How does a Ferrule Connector work?

In household and industrial wiring, twisted wires must be inserted into screw terminals or spring-loaded connectors. For industrial equipment, it may take hundreds or even thousands of these connections to automate a task. If even one of these wires comes loose or breaks, you're most likely expecting costly downtime.

Each connection is therefore fundamental. While the flexibility of the braided wire allows for much easier routing than one would expect from a solid core wire, the ends tend to stick out. This makes the actual connection to a screw or spring-loaded connector a bit risky. In a perfect world, you would have thread woven in the middle and solid at the ends.

What is a ferrule?

The ferrule is the small equipment or tools that are very useful for joining, fastening, reinforcing, and sealing any number and type of joints. A ferrule is generally made up of metal and we proposed to the users in various shapes such as circular, narrow, etc. A ferrule can be of plastic but is less preferred due to its resistivity. They can be used in plumbing systems for sealing and ensuring complete prevention of fluid or gas leakage. A ferrule is deformable in that it can be made as per the desired and required situation.

Working on ferrule connector

A ferrule connector is generally used with wires. With regards to wiring, a ferrule is a short deformable metal cylinder, by and large made from tin-plated copper. This short cylinder (or long ring) is put over a segment of abandoned wire reaching out from stripped protection, then compacted with a creasing instrument to keep the strands intact. Ferrules examined here additionally include an erupted segment toward one side, which effectively directs the strands into the principal pleated area and gives a push to the limit support.

When folded, the group becomes what for practical purposes resembles the end of a strong central cable. Flaring the ferrule has a few advantages, including the strain relief mentioned above and the way each strand of a cable can now be embedded in a connector without fear of a pair being uprooted sideways after termination. Ferrules significantly reduce clogging of the contact between the cable and connector and even help reduce oxidation of the stranded wires because there is no air gap between them.

Types of Fittings

Fittings are distinguished based on their connection types and the functions they perform. There are many types of fittings: Compression Fittings, Bite-type Fittings, Mechanical Grip Fittings, Flare Fittings, End Fittings, Threaded Fittings, NPT (National Pipe Thread) Fittings

Compression Fittings:

Tube Fittings        SS Connector      Union Tee      Male Elbow

Compression fittings are fittings which connect tubes using compression on a gasket, ring, or ferrule. The compression is typically made by tightening a nut onto the fitting over the tubing and ferrule, compressing and securing the tubing inside. Standard compression fittings do not require tools to assemble, making them convenient for quick, simple installation. However, they cannot withstand very high pressures and do not have as much flexibility as soldered fittings, making them less functional in systems with vibration, thermal cycling, and other dynamic forces. They also come in a limited number of materials (most commonly brass) and are best suited for metal on metal connections.

Bite-type Fittings:

Are compressive fittings with a sharpened ferrule that "bites" the tube when compressed and provides the seal. Bite-type fittings, like standard compressive fittings, require no special tools to assemble but provide a stronger, higher pressure connection.

Mechanical grip Fittings:

Mechanical grip fittings are two-ferrule assemblies. The back ferrule grips the tubing while pressing up against the front ferrule, which spring-loads the front ferrule and creates a seal between the tubing and fitting body. These fittings can be reassembled multiple times without damaging components or tubing. They have good resistance to mechanical vibration

Flare Fittings:

Consist of a body with a flared or coned end. Special flaring tools are used to install the tube to fit inside the flared end, providing a deep seal. Flare fittings can handle higher pressures and a wider range of operating parameters than standard compression fittings.

End Fittings:

End fittings provide specific surfaces for connecting tubes.

Clamp ends are fittings which allow tubes to be clamped to the connection.

Plain ends are fittings which allow tubes to be connected by adhesive, solder, or other forms.

Flange Fittings:

Flange fittings are ports with flush surfaces perpendicular to the attached tube. These surfaces are joined and sealed via clamps, bolts, and/or welding.

Threaded Fittings:

Threaded fittings have screw threads (built-in grooves) on their inner (female) or outer (male) surfaces designed to accept tubing with matching threads. Threads which provide a simple connection but no seal are called straight threads. Tapered threads are designed to provide a tight seal for gases or fluids under pressure. Seal reliability can be improved by adding a coating or seal tape (Teflon). Especially precise threads are called "dry fit", meaning they seal without the need for an additional sealant, which is important in applications where sealant addition could cause contamination or corrosion.

Choosing the most appropriate type of Stainless Steel for Single Compression Tube Fittings and Double Compression Tube Fittings

Following are the most important factors you should consider while choosing the  right Stainless Steel for
your Single Ferrule Compression Tube Fittings and Double Compression Tube Fittings.

  • Corrosive Environment : Atmospheric, Water, Concentration of particular chemicals, chloride content, presence of acid.
  • Temperature of Operation : High temperatures usually accelerate corrosion rates and therefore indicate a higher grade. Low temperatures will require a tough austenitic steel.
  • Strength Required – Higher strength can be obtained from the Austenitic, Duplex, Martensitic and PH steels. Other processes such as welding and forming often influence which of these is most suitable. For example, high strength austenitic steels produced by work hardening would not be suitable where welding was necessary as the process would soften the steel.
  • Customer expectation regarding performance of material  – This is an important consideration often missed in the selection process. Particularly, what are the aesthetic requirements as compared to the structural requirements?
  • There may also be special requirements such as non-magnetic properties to take into account.
  • It must also be borne in mind that steel type alone is not the only factor in material selection. Surface finish is at least as important in many applications, particularly where there is a strong aesthetic component.
  • Availability: There may be a perfectly correct technical choice of material which cannot be implemented because it is not available in the time required.
  • Cost: Sometimes the correct technical option is not finally chosen on cost grounds alone. However, it is important to assess cost on the correct basis. Many stainless steel applications are shown to be advantageous on a life cycle cost basis rather than initial cost.
